Global Supply Chain Metric Tracking to Reduce Emissions

The Challenge

One of the largest food and beverage companies wished to track C02 emissions across its global supply chain. One subsidiary had difficulty in satisfying this requirement due to lack of experience (they had never tracked before) and lack of support at the site level.

Our Solution

A new template was devised for site administrators across supply chain to enter their water and electricity usage. Key personnel were trained in how to enter the needed data into the automated spreadsheet. After a few months, it became obvious that site support was struggling to satisfy their part in the process. After investigating the “sticking” points, the solution was tweaked to track emissions from a top-down versus a bottom-up perspective. The change in reporting was stress-tested and validated for accuracy.

Results

C02 emissions were reported accurately and efficiently without burdening a group of employees. The measurement system highlighted gaps and opportunities to reduce energy and save cost. The measurement approach stayed in place for several years and provided validation for external publication.
