What You’ll Be Doing
As a Data Engineering Intern, you’ll be embedded on a project that supports cross-functional teams—many from the National Institutes of Health—as they move AI use cases from early concept to Minimum Viable Product (MVP). These use cases often focus on improving public health or biomedical research. You will:
Assist with preparing, cleaning, and structuring data for AI/ML projects
Support internal teams that may not have dedicated engineering resources
Help build data pipelines and infrastructure for MVP development
Contribute to lightweight research and prototyping of tools and models
Participate in technical knowledge-sharing sessions with federal clients
Learn to communicate engineering challenges clearly to non-technical stakeholders
Work in a collaborative, remote environment with senior consultants and engineers
Contribute to responsible AI practices and documentation
You May Be a Good Fit If You Are…
Pursuing a bachelor’s or a graduate degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, Machine Learning, or related field
Comfortable working with Python and data-related libraries (e.g. Pandas, SQLAlchemy, scikit-learn, PyTorch)
Familiar with database systems and cloud environments (e.g. AWS, Azure, or GCP)
Working with IDEs powered by AI such as Cursor.AI

Internet of Things (IoT) Specialist | Remote (DC, Maryland, Virginia, preferred)
What you’ll be doing
Leading cross-functional teams as they move their IoT-enabled solutions from idea to shaping a use case to Minimum Viable Product (MVP). These teams will include members from various institutes or centers of the National Institutes of Health, proposing use cases that typically connect to biomedical research, clinical environments, or public health applications. You will guide them in translating concepts into deployable IoT architectures, integrating devices, sensors, networks, and cloud platforms to create solutions that serve both internal and external audiences.
Working with Mind Moves
You’ll collaborate with client leads, business operators, fellow consultants, and the Mind Moves project team—while working closely with world-leading scientists at NIH and Mind Moves. This role offers the chance to:
- Make a measurable impact on scientific discovery and public health.
- Gain hands-on experience with frontier AI/ML technologies.
- Operate at the intersection of health, data, and AI in a creative, mission-driven environment.
The contract will include:
- Lead the design and architecture of IoT solutions from concept through deployment, ensuring scalability, security, and interoperability across diverse devices and systems.
- Collaborate with cross-functional federal agency teams to translate health, research, and operational use cases into IoT-enabled solutions.
- Define system requirements, select appropriate platforms, and oversee integration of sensors, devices, and edge/cloud infrastructure.
- Provide technical guidance on connectivity protocols (e.g., MQTT, CoAP, HTTP/REST) and ensure reliable, secure data exchange across networks.
- Develop solution blueprints and architecture diagrams that bridge research concepts with practical, deployable IoT systems.
- Conduct reviews of hardware and software implementations to ensure compliance with engineering and cybersecurity best practices.
- Mentor teams on IoT solution development, deployment models, and lifecycle management.
- Explore innovative approaches for applying IoT in biomedical and public health contexts while assessing risks and operational feasibility.
Contractor has the following skills/background:
- 10+ years of professional experience in systems engineering, solution architecture, or IoT solution design, with at least 3+ years in an architect-level role.
- Proven track record designing and deploying end-to-end IoT solutions (edge devices, connectivity, cloud, and application integration).
- Deep knowledge of IoT connectivity standards and protocols (e.g., MQTT, CoAP, Zigbee, LoRaWAN, 5G).
- Expertise in cloud platforms (AWS IoT, Azure IoT Hub, or Google IoT Core) and hybrid edge-cloud deployments.
- Experience with data ingestion, stream processing, and analytics platforms for IoT data (e.g., Kafka, Spark, TimescaleDB).
- Proficiency with embedded systems programming (C/C++), scripting languages (Python), and containerization (Docker/Kubernetes).
- Familiarity with cybersecurity frameworks and best practices for securing IoT devices and data pipelines.
- Strong understanding of systems integration, API development, and enterprise architecture principles.
- Background in life sciences, biomedical engineering, or public health applications preferred.
- Ability to guide teams through technical design reviews, debugging complex system issues, and optimizing IoT deployments for reliability and performance.
- Excellent communication skills—able to explain technical architectures to both engineers and non-technical stakeholders.
- Degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field; advanced degree a plus.
- Maryland/Virginia/DC base or Eastern time zone preferred; flexibility to travel occasionally.

Machine Learning - AI Engineer | Remote (DC, Maryland, Virginia, preferred)
What you’ll be doing

- Deliver ‘knowledge sessions’ to teams to familiarize and give working knowledge to teams
- Assist in data engineering and preparation tasks to enable teams who may not have engineering resources to utilize their data or new data sources
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams across federal agencies and supporting partners
- Designing solutions with defined requirements
- Innovating ‘outside the box’ while accounting for risk
- Articulate the art of the impossible and lead to the edge of the frontier of innovation
Contractor has the following skills/background:
- 7+ years professional experience with Data Science, Deep Learning and/or Engineering
- Experience with Generative AI (e.g. Large Language Models)
- Background, education, or experience working in life sciences, preferably the biomedical or bioinformatics space
- Previous experience moving ideas through an innovation pipeline from proof of concept to MVP to full scale deployment
- Proficiency in Python and machine learning frameworks like SKLearn, and PyTorch
- Proficiency with relational database systems (SQL) and object-based data stores
- Experience with cloud platforms such as Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud
- Proficient in Git and version control
- Competent in maintaining and optimizing infrastructure for data collection, management, and transformation
- Experience building models and architecture to support natural language processing and/or automation tasks
- Experience with optimizing and tuning models for efficient execution
- Ability to evaluate models in terms of efficacy while being mindful of best practices with responsible AI
- Demonstrated experience building ML solutions from technical design to operational deployment
- Demonstrated experience designing, implementing, or integrating agentic AI workflows (e.g., multi-step reasoning, tool-calling, or task orchestration across systems) to automate complex business or research processes.
- Ability to support end users with code reviews, debugging, and troubleshooting issues
- Ability to apply emergent DS/ML techniques (like RAG, and prompt engineering) to solve business/operational problems
- Understanding of a Software Development Lifecycle, including agile/SCRUM methodology
- Excellent communication skills, including fluency in English

The contract will include:
- Design and develop user interfaces that enhance user experience, accessibility, and engagement.
- Create wireframes, mockups, and prototypes using tools like Figma, Adobe XD, or Sketch.
- Implement responsive and accessible front-end code using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and modern frameworks (React, Vue.js, or Angular).
- Conduct user research, usability testing, and A/B testing to refine designs based on feedback.
- Ensure design consistency and brand alignment across all digital platforms.
- Optimize UI performance and troubleshoot front-end issues.
- Stay current with UX/UI trends, emerging technologies and industry best practices.
Contractor has the following skills/background:
- 3+ years of experience in UX/UI design and front-end development.
- Proficiency in HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and front-end frameworks (React, Vue.js, or Angular).

- Strong understanding of responsive design, accessibility standards (WCAG), and usability best practices.
