Organizational Assessment for a Startup to Know Where to Invest

The Challenge

A small size construction company was experiencing growing pains as top line sales increased. A lack of standardized policies and procedures routinely caused internal confusion especially for new hires. Limited resources meant that employees took on multiple roles and developed processes in an ad hoc manner. Core capabilities in performance, risk and financial management were insufficient.

Our Solution

Upfront diagnostics — an on-site audit of the company operations, interviews with key stakeholders and mapping the end-to-end business process — revealed a number of gaps and opportunities. With a focus on revenue-generating activities, the opportunities were then categorized and prioritized to develop a phased action plan and recommendations for where to focus next.

Results

Recommendations to hire new team members, build new capabilities and invest in automation technologies were implemented over a period of time. The team used the comprehensive process map to develop standard operating procedures and formalize the handoffs of information. Eventually, a cultural shift towards structure and efficient systems enabled best practices to evolve in project management, accounting and financial reporting which positively impacted the bottom line.
