Yoga in the Workplace

Many people associate yoga only with physical exercise, but it is so much more. Rooted in ancient philosophy, yoga offers modern-day practitioners benefits for all aspects of life, including work.

In celebration of International Yoga Day on June 21, consider adding just one or two of these elements of yoga in your work life:

Take a few minutes before a meeting to reflect on how you want to show up. What experience do you want to create for yourself? Why will that help? Build self-awareness of what you want to contribute. Once you are clear on your intentions, you’re likely to have a more positive impact on the rest of the group.

Tap into gratitude, compassion and kindness as you consider your relationships with colleagues. Even in stressful situations, you can shift your mindset and reframe the stories you tell yourself that leave you disappointed or unhappy.

Focus on the task at hand with your full attention, instead of multitasking. Practice listening intently when others speak – so closely that you can repeat what they say word for word.

Feeling frazzled at your desk? Restore your energy by taking a walk around the block or inside your building. Take five minutes to stretch, meditate, listen to music or connect with your breath. You may find you’re more effective if your mind is clear.

Recognize the boundless potential that resides in you and others. The traditional yoga salutation of namaste (pronounced NA-MA-STAY) translates into “my soul recognizes and bows to the divinity of yours.”

Are you a yogi? We’d love to hear how yoga helps you in the workplace.
